Lower Chances of Preterm Labor

For mothers at risk of preterm labor, magnesium sulfate, more commonly known as Epsom salt, may help protect their babies from cerebral palsy. The new review, completed by researchers in the U.S., Australia and France, has found that magnesium sulfate could help decrease the incidence of the condition, which affects one in 500 newborn babies overall and one in 10 very premature babies (less than 28 weeks gestation). While the exact mechanism within the chemical that protects the newborns is unknown, magnesium is vital for normal cell function, and in some circumstances, can improve blood flow.
